Temporarily importing shipments

If you are temporarily importing or exporting goods to be reviewed, repaired, altered or processed within one year and then returned, you may be able to file your entry under an Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission (ATA) carnet or Temporary Importation Under Bond (TIB) to avoid paying duties.

ATA carnets*, commonly known as “merchandise passports”, are international customs documents that simplify customs procedures for the temporary export or import of various types of goods.

Carnets facilitate international business by avoiding extensive customs procedures, eliminating payment of customs duties and excise taxes and eliminating the purchase of temporary import bonds.

Benefits of ATA carnets:

  • Save time, effort and money
  • One document – one application
  • Good for one year
  • Accepted in 80 counties and territories
  • Cover commercial samples, professional equipment and goods for exhibitions and fairs
  • Eliminate duties, taxes and Temporary Importation Bonds
  • Easy exit – easy re-entry

ATA carnets do not exempt holders from obtaining the necessary licenses or permits. Also, goods shipped on an ATA carnet cannot be sold until the carnet has been closed and the goods return to origin.

Obtaining an ATA carnet is a simple three-part process:

  1. General List
  2. ATA Carnet Application
  3. Security Deposit

Need Assistance?

For countries that do not support ATA carnets, a Temporary Importation Under Bond (TIB) is needed. Obtaining a TIB can be a lengthy and cumbersome process, but we can help you complete the process quickly and easily.
