How DHL uses liquid nitrogen technology for ultra-frozen shipping

In 2020, DHL introduced its enhanced cold chain logistics through which the transport of shipments is carried out at extremely low and cryogenic temperatures. We collaborate with our temperature management specialist, LifeConEx and a provider of global frozen shipping services, Cryoport, to offer an express delivery option for temperature-sensitive items. Here’s how we do it:

1. Maintaining -150°C to -195°C ultra-frozen temperatures for shipments

We employ a non-hazardous liquid nitrogen dry vapour shipper that is able to provide 10 days of holding time at an ultra-low temperature of -150°C to -195°C. Compared to dry ice, frequent replenishment is not needed, offering more reliability. Temperature monitoring, alongside parcel tracking, is also provided to customers who want greater visibility of their shipments at any given time.

This technology has enabled the DHL Express' Medical Express team to fulfil medical shipments with greater reliability. In collaboration with Cryoport’s deep frozen logistics, we offer optimal temperature-sensitive shipping solutions worldwide. Together, we help to pave the way for reliable logistics in the Life Sciences and Healthcare sectors.

2. Ensuring end-to-end solution from pickup to delivery

From the moment we pick up your parcels to the point of delivery, our Life Science specialists maintain 24-hours monitoring of temperatures and environmental conditions along the supply chain. At the same time, we remain fully compliant with International Air Transport Association (IATA) shipping regulations, so you won’t have to worry about any delays in delivery. You can also be rest assured that each parcel receives top priority handling, with all safety measures put in place to protect the integrity of the items.

3. Protecting our environment

Diesel refrigeration during transport results in extensive carbon emissions. However, with liquid nitrogen, we ensure no hazardous emissions are generated; the only by-product is nitrogen which is an essential element of the air we breathe in. As such, our carbon footprint – as well as yours – is reduced considerably. In addition, liquid nitrogen refrigeration, in contrast to diesel refrigeration, produces less noise, making it an ideal option for carrying out late-night deliveries. This means we can mitigate both air and noise pollution, all while navigating the quickest delivery route possible.

At DHL Express, we simplify the lives of our customers by offering other flexible and time-sensitive delivery solutions such as same day delivery and on-demand shipping. Sign up for a DHL Express account today to start delivering your temperature-sensitive goods via ultra-frozen shipping.
